The Power of Touch

Esthetician’s are licensed to use their hands to touch their client’s facial skin, an ability that can have great effects on the clients overall well-being. In fact, recent Nobel Prize winning researchhas found that the skin contains sensors that are integral to overall wellness. Known as TRPMS, TRPV1,PIEZO1 and PIEZO2, research on these sensors has explained how heat, cold and touch can initiate signals in our nervous system.

Safety Guidelines and Training

As with all professional treatments, especially now, it is important to learn about proper sanitation and safety guidelines and implement them in your salon or spa.

This includes:

Understanding how all of the spa and salon needs to be modified for proper sterilization, including proper cleaning of the front desk area, shelves, waiting room chairs, facial bed, trolley, chair counter tops, bathrooms (sink, toilette), towel dispenser, soap dispenser.
Making sure all areas are well ventilated.
When possible, utilizing disposable implements and utensils such as sheets, spatulas, headbands, brushes and towels to avoid cross contamination.
Wearing personal protective gear such as medical grade nitrile gloves, goggles, face mask and lab coat and learning proper removal of gloves and changing gloves upon completion of any procedure and prior touching of any clean surfaces
Proper cleaning and storing of non-disposable implements in a dry sterilizer or autoclave.

It is particularly important to follow health and sanitation guidelines when dealing with a client who has compromised skin, especially if they are an oncology patient.

Initial Intake

It is also important to remember that no two clients are alike. Each client, comes with an entirely unique set of circumstances that must be accommodated correctly in order to have a beneficial treatment.

For example, proper intake form is key.

Skin Analysis and Consultation

For all clients, every effort should always be made to make sure the client is comfortable and not being exposed to unduly sensitizers such as bright lights and music.

Important modifications include:

Once client is situated in the facial bed or chair, use a magnifying lamp and analyze the skin.
Before you switch on the light, place the cotton over your client’s eyes to prevent the glare
Take a look at the condition, whether the skin is dry, compromised, oily, or whether the client is experiencing any kind of sensitivity

Once you examine the skin correctly have a consultation with your client. Key points for this are:

When you are doing a consultation, move forward and sit next to them.
Always look at them and make sure they are looking at you.
Make sure their ears are not blocked in any way so they can hear you properly and that they can see you.
It’s important to be calm, have a very calming demeanor and speak clearly and slowly.
Always pay attention and use proper etiquette.
Ask your client about what are her main concerns?
How is she taking care of the skin at home on a regular basis?

Carefully Position the Client

To begin a facial, position the client in the facial bed, drape them, drape the headband to secure the hair. Then take a face mask, put it on.
In addition to using a face mask and non-latex disposable nitrile gloves, consider using additional safety equipment during the treatment, including a face screen for facials. This is a clear, washable polycarbonate screen affixed on a moveable stand that can be placed over the client’s head during the treatment and adjusted to suitable heights for each client. This permits easy visibility and is break and shatter resistant.

Pre-Cleansing:

Moisten cotton with a mild seaweed-based makeup remover that has a neutral pH, such as Repêchage® Opti-Cleanse™. This can also be used as a pre-cleanse for removing makeup from the skin.
Take two pieces of cotton that have been saturated with makeup remover and place it on the eye area. Leave one of the pads on as you work on the first eye.
Gently remove the eye makeup, working downwards first, stroking through the eyelashes, then wiping under the eye.
Turn pad inside out for a clean surface then repeat, going downwards on the lashes and wiping under the eye area.
Dispose of the cotton and move on to the other eye.
Repeat on the other side.
Take a dry piece of cotton, and dry the area.

CLEANSE

Cleanse the skin by applying the Hydra Dew Pure™ Gentle Foaming Cleanser using a circular motion around the face.
Remove the cleanser with cotton and water and repeat the removal until the skin is very clean and free of the cleanser.
Always end at the temples.

MASK

Empty the content of the Hydra Dew Pure™ Mask A packette into a rubber bowl (sold separately), stir to fluff, then add the content of the Hydra Dew Pure™ Gel B packette.
Mix very well by stirring and fluffing the contents until smooth for about 30 seconds.
Apply at once over the face, eye contour area and neck. Place Eye Rescue Pads with Seaweed Filtrate and Tea Extracts over the eyes and leave on for 15 minutes.

Optional: Cut Mylar sheet (sold separately) into strips and apply over eye area and face to provide thermal insulation. Be sure not to cover nostrils.
