I love being an esthetician and I do believe finding a career you love is a key element for success. However, success must be worked at.
Below I’m sharing some tips I’ve put into practice over the years as a beauty professional, which have been instrumental in helping me get to where I am today.
Find a healthy work-life balance.
A healthy work/life balance is essential for you, your employer, and your family. Remember, we work to live – we do not live to work. You will be most happy and thus most successful in a place of business that fits your schedule and your needs.
Find the work environment to help grow your career.
You want to find the right work environment that invests in their employees. For example, does the spa offer continuing education? Are there employees who have been there for over 10 years who you can learn from and help you grow as an esthetician? Working as an apprentice can be an invaluable learning experience.
Join professional affiliations.
In addition to continuing education, it is beneficial for your career to become affiliated with prestigious beauty associations and organizations, such as CIDESCO. An affiliation with this type of organization can help provide advanced educational and networking opportunities that will help increase your knowledge and overall career development.
Practice, practice and practice your craft.
Overtime, you will see your career soar to new heights. The more skill and knowledge you have about technique, as well as products, marketing and merchandising, the more valuable an asset you will become. Never stop learning and practicing your craft!
Don’t be afraid to explore new opportunities.
Once you gain at least five years of experience in a spa setting, you may want to discover other opportunities. For example, opening your own spa or salon, working as an educator for a manufacturer or as consultant to help open new spas. When I took a leap of faith in 1980 and went from a spa owner to the CEO of my own skin care company, it was scary. However, to this day it was the best decision I’ve ever made in my career.
