Dr. Charles Yarish, Ph.D., of the Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at the University of Connecticut Joins Repêchage as a Consultant

Secaucus, NJ February, 2015 – Dr. Charles Yarish, Ph.D., of the Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at the University of Connecticut will serve as a consultant to the Repêchage Board of Directors for 2015.

Dr. Yarish will help in the evaluation and sourcing of sustainable wild harvested seaweeds for cosmetic and agricultural uses.

Dr. Yarish has an extensive background in marine sciences. He received his Ph.D. from Rutgers University in 1976, and then joined the faculty at the University of Connecticut where he is in the Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology and The Department of Marine Sciences.  He has also been an adjunct Professor of Marine Sciences at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, visiting Scientist at the Biologische Anstalt Helgoland, Germany, a visiting Professor of Marine Biology at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands, and most recently, a Guest Professor at Shanghai Fisheries University, China.

At the University of Connecticut, he developed an internationally known laboratory for seaweed research and has been a leader in seaweed aquaculture.  He is most interested in the development of integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) and nutrient bioextraction systems where seaweeds are a key extractive component.  Dr. Yarish has also published and edited several books, including the most recent Long Island Sound: Prospects for the Urban Sea (Springer, 2014).

He has received numerous awards and grants domestically, including from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. In the international arena, Dr. Yarish has served with many organizations including the International Executive Service Corps’ Aquacultural Project (Kenya), member of the Organizing Committee & the Executive Secretariat for the Vth International Phycological Congress, Qingdao, China and The Advisory Board of the Institute of BioSciences (Halifax), National Research Council of Canada and a member of the RCN for the US National Science Foundation genome project on Porphyra.

Repêchage has been in the business of developing, manufacturing, and distributing seaweed based skin care products since 1980, and is thrilled to have a marine science and seaweed expert like Dr. Charles Yarish as a consultant.
